Looking for a bimatoprost coupon? Bimatoprost is the low-cost generic prostaglandin analog eye drop used to lower high eye pressure in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension (the brand version is Lumigan). Because a generic is already available, cash prices are usually modest, but they can still vary widely from one pharmacy to the next. Rx.com compares prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can find today's lowest price near you. Enter your ZIP above to see the current price on bimatoprost at pharmacies close to you.
What is bimatoprost and how does it work?
Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog used in the eye. As an ophthalmic solution (sold under the brand name Lumigan in 0.01% and 0.03% strengths), it is FDA-approved to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (the pressure inside the eye) in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Lowering that pressure helps protect the optic nerve over time. A biodegradable implant (Durysta) containing bimatoprost 10 mcg, placed inside the eye, is also FDA-approved as a single administration to lower eye pressure.
A different bimatoprost product, Latisse (0.03% topical solution), is FDA-approved to treat hypotrichosis of the eyelashes by increasing eyelash growth, length, thickness, and darkness. Your prescriber and pharmacist can confirm which bimatoprost product is right for your specific situation.
Bimatoprost cost and savings without insurance
Bimatoprost is available as a generic, which typically keeps the cash price lower than the brand. Even so, what you pay out of pocket can differ a lot depending on which pharmacy you use, so comparing before you fill is worth the effort. Rx.com checks prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies to help you find the lowest cash price near you. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price on bimatoprost at pharmacies close to you.
There is also a manufacturer savings program for eligible patients. Terms, eligibility, and any restrictions vary and can change, so check the official manufacturer page at savewithays.com for current details. Manufacturer offers usually cannot be combined with a discount coupon on the same purchase, so it is smart to compare both options.
Bimatoprost vs. other glaucoma eye drops
Bimatoprost belongs to the prostaglandin analog class of eye-pressure medicines. Other drugs in or near this class are commonly prescribed for the same goal of lowering intraocular pressure, and prices vary between them and between pharmacies. Related medications include:
- Latanoprost — another prostaglandin analog eye drop
- Travoprost — a prostaglandin analog eye drop
- Timolol — a beta-blocker eye drop used to lower eye pressure
- Lumigan — the brand-name bimatoprost ophthalmic solution
- Latisse — the FDA-approved bimatoprost product for eyelash growth
Only your prescriber can decide which medicine fits your eyes and health history. If a switch is appropriate, you can compare the cash price of each option here before filling.
Safety and side effects
Bimatoprost has no boxed warning. The most common eye side effect is conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the eye). It may permanently darken the iris by increasing brown pigmentation, especially in eyes that already have mixed colors, and it may darken the skin of the eyelid or the area around the eye (this skin change is usually reversible). It also tends to increase eyelash growth, length, thickness, and number. Bimatoprost can cause macular edema, including cystoid macular edema, and extra caution is advised in people who are aphakic or pseudophakic with a torn posterior lens capsule, and in those with active eye inflammation (uveitis) or a known history of ocular herpes.
Remove contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait 15 minutes before putting them back in. Avoid letting the bottle tip touch the eye or other surfaces, since contaminated containers have been linked to bacterial keratitis. Note that if bimatoprost is used for eyelash growth in someone already using a prostaglandin analog to lower eye pressure, it may reduce that pressure-lowering effect.
