What is nystatin and how does it work?
Nystatin is a polyene antifungal medicine used to treat fungal (Candida) infections. It works locally, right where it is applied, because it is not absorbed into the bloodstream through the gut or through intact skin. That means it treats the infection on the surface it touches and is not used for infections deep inside the body (systemic fungal infections). It is sold under brand names such as Mycostatin, Nilstat, Nystop, Nyamyc, and Bio-Statin, and as a generic.
Different forms treat different infections. The oral suspension (liquid) and pastilles or tablets treat candidiasis (thrush) in the mouth, and oral tablets treat Candida infection in the intestines. The topical cream, ointment, and powder treat Candida infections of the skin, including diaper rash and infections in skin folds (intertrigo). Vaginal tablets have been used for vaginal candidiasis. Your provider will choose the form that fits your infection.
Nystatin cost without insurance and how to save
Nystatin is available as a generic, which is typically much less expensive than brand-name versions. Because it is already a low-cost generic, many people pay a modest cash price even without insurance. Still, the price is not the same everywhere. What one pharmacy charges can be very different from a pharmacy down the street, so it pays to compare before you fill.
Rx.com compares nystatin prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies and shows you the lowest cash price near you. There is no membership fee to check. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price, and bring the coupon to your pharmacy. Prices change often, which is why we show them live on the page rather than quoting a fixed amount.
Nystatin alternatives and related antifungals
Nystatin is one of several antifungal options. Depending on the type and location of the infection, a provider might prescribe a different medicine. Common related antifungals include fluconazole (an oral pill often used for yeast infections), clotrimazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole. There is also a combination product, nystatin-triamcinolone, that pairs nystatin with a steroid for certain skin infections with inflammation.
Only your provider can decide which medicine is right for your situation. If you have a prescription for any of these, you can compare cash prices on Rx.com the same way to find the lowest price near you.
Nystatin safety and side effects
Nystatin has no boxed warning and is generally very well tolerated. Oral forms can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and mouth irritation; higher oral doses may lead to stomach upset. Topical forms can cause local irritation, burning, itching, or a rash. It is meant to work only where it is applied and is not used for systemic fungal infections.
Stop the medicine and contact your provider if you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or trouble breathing. Rare but serious skin reactions (including Stevens-Johnson syndrome) have been reported. Finish the full course even if you feel better, so the infection clears completely.
