What is vancomycin HCl and how does it work?
Vancomycin hydrochloride is a glycopeptide (tricyclic glycopeptide) antibiotic. The oral capsules (brand Vancocin) and oral solution kit (brand Firvanq) are FDA-approved to treat Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff colitis) and enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA, in adults and children.
Oral vancomycin works locally inside the gut and is not meaningfully absorbed into the bloodstream, so it does not treat infections elsewhere in the body. The intravenous (IV) form is a separate hospital-administered product used for serious systemic gram-positive infections such as MRSA bloodstream infections, endocarditis, and bone, joint, skin, or lower-respiratory infections. The two forms are not interchangeable: IV vancomycin does not treat C. diff or enterocolitis, and oral vancomycin does not treat systemic infections.
Vancomycin HCl cost and savings without insurance
Vancomycin is available as an FDA-approved generic, which is generally more affordable than the brand-name capsules or solution kit. Even so, the cash price for the same prescription can differ a lot depending on which pharmacy you use and the quantity and strength you are filling, so it is worth comparing before you pay. That is exactly what Rx.com does: we check prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies and show you the lowest one near you.
Using an Rx.com discount coupon does not require insurance, and it can sometimes beat an insurance copay on a generic. There is no manufacturer copay savings card for generic vancomycin. To see what you would pay, enter your ZIP above to see today's price, then print, save, or text yourself the free coupon to show your pharmacist.
Vancomycin alternatives and related medications
For C. diff infection, providers may consider other antibiotics depending on severity and whether it is a first or recurring episode. Related options your prescriber might discuss include Dificid (fidaxomicin) and Flagyl (metronidazole). Clindamycin is a different antibiotic used for other infections and is actually one of the medicines that can raise the risk of C. diff, so it is not a substitute here.
If you were prescribed vancomycin specifically, do not switch on your own. Which antibiotic is appropriate depends on your diagnosis, severity, and history. You can compare prices on the brand equivalents, Vancocin and Firvanq, on their own pages.
Vancomycin HCl safety and side effects
Vancomycin can affect the kidneys (nephrotoxicity or acute kidney injury), most often with IV use, higher doses, longer courses, or when combined with other drugs that stress the kidneys; renal function is monitored during IV therapy. Hearing-related side effects (ototoxicity) can also occur, mainly with IV use, high blood levels, or in older adults and people with reduced kidney function. IV administration can cause an infusion reaction (flushing, rash, and low blood pressure, once called "red man syndrome") tied to giving the dose too quickly.
Oral vancomycin is only minimally absorbed, but a small amount can get into the bloodstream when the bowel is inflamed (as in C. diff colitis) or when kidney function is reduced, which can raise the risk of systemic side effects. Rare but serious skin reactions (such as DRESS or SJS/TEN) have been reported. Vancomycin does not carry a boxed warning, but IV therapy requires blood-level and kidney monitoring. This is not medical advice; take vancomycin exactly as prescribed and talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your specific risks.
