Ethacrynic Acid
Ethacrynic Acid 25MG
What is Ethacrynic Acid?
Ethacrynic acid is a potent loop diuretic primarily used to treat fluid retention (edema) associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease, when an agent with greater diuretic potential than those traditionally used is deemed necessary. Unlike other loop diuretics, ethacrynic acid is a phenoxyacetic acid derivative, not a sulfonamide, making it suitable for patients allergic to sulfa drugs. It functions by inhibiting the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to significant diuresis and natriuresis.Side Effects
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Bloody or black stools.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood.
Warnings
- Confusion, weakness, uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath, or numbness or tingling in your hands, feet, or lips.
- Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant, or breast feeding, or if you have heart disease, severe kidney disease or cirrhosis (a liver disease).
