What is Apretude?
Apretude (cabotegravir extended-release injectable suspension) is a prescription medication used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 infection in individuals who are at risk of HIV and have a negative status confirmed prior to initiation. Administered as an intramuscular injection, Apretude offers an alternative to daily oral PrEP, given initially once a month for two months, followed by subsequent injections every two months.Side Effects
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
- Depression, unusual changes in behaviors or moods, thoughts of hurting yourself
Warnings
- Your doctor may do tests to make sure you are negative from HIV-1 infection before receiving this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or depression.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
- This medicine may cause the following problems:Liver problemsChanges in mood or behavior (including depression, suicidal thoughts)
- Always practice safe sex, even if your partner also has HIV. If you stop taking this medicine or do not take it as prescribed, you may spread HIV to others. Do not reuse or share needles, or other items, that may have blood or body fluids on them.
