What is Ciprofloxacin Hcl?
Your doctor may prescribe ciprofloxacin if you have a bacterial infection. Ciprofloxacin has been used to treat infections of the bones, joints, urinary tract, and skin. Doctors have also used ciprofloxacin to treat abdominal infections and infectious diarrhea. Ciprofloxacin can be administered orally or intravenously.
Side Effects
- Numbness, tingling, weakness, or burning pain in your hands, arms, legs, or feet
- Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
- Diarrhea which may contain blood
Warnings
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, myasthenia gravis, aortic aneurysm (bulge in the wall of the largest artery), or a history of heart rhythm problems (including prolonged QT interval), electrolyte imbalance, nerve problems, seizures, brain problems, stroke, or mental illness. Tell your doctor if you have ever had tendon or joint problems, including rheumatoid arthritis, or if you have received a transplant.
- Your doctor may tell you to stop breastfeeding, and pump and discard your breast milk during treatment and for at least 2 days after your final dose.
- This medicine may cause the following problems:Tendinitis and tendon rupture (which may happen after treatment ends)Nerve damage in the arms or legs, which may become permanentChanges in mood or behavior, seizures, or increased pressure in the headSerious skin reactionsKidney problemsLiver problemsIncreased risk of aortic aneurysmHeart rhythm changesChanges in blood sugar levels
- This medicine may make you dizzy, drowsy, or lightheaded. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin is a generic antibiotic also available under the brand names Cipro, Cetraxal, Proquin, and Ciloxan. Ciprofloxacin was first introduced in 1987. In the treatment of bacterial infections, ciprofloxacin use is very common.

- This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.
- This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine.
- Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.
- This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds.
- Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
