What is Imipenem-Cilastatin?
Imipenem-cilastatin is a combination antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Imipenem, an antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class, is effective against a wide range of bacteria, but is broken down by renal enzymes, which is why it is combined with cilastatin, an enzyme inhibitor that prolongs the activity of imipenem. This combination is typically administered intravenously and is used for treating severe or complicated infections where other antibiotics may not be effective.Side Effects

- Severe diarrhea, which may contain blood
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
Warnings
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, seizures or similar nervous system conditions, or allergies.
- This medicine can cause diarrhea. Call your doctor if the diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or is bloody. Do not take any medicine to stop diarrhea until you have talked to your doctor. Diarrhea can occur 2 months or more after you stop taking this medicine.
- Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
