What is ivermectin and how does it work?
Ivermectin is an anthelmintic (antiparasitic) medicine in the avermectin class. As an oral tablet (brand name Stromectol), it is FDA-approved to treat intestinal (nondisseminated) strongyloidiasis caused by the roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis, and onchocerciasis (river blindness) caused by Onchocerca volvulus. It works by killing the intestinal worms in strongyloidiasis and by killing the developing (microfilariae) worms in onchocerciasis. It does not kill adult Onchocerca volvulus worms, so more than one course may be needed over time.
Ivermectin is also used off-label by some prescribers for conditions such as scabies and head lice. Topical forms of ivermectin exist for other uses (for example, Soolantra cream for rosacea and Sklice lotion for lice), but those are different products from the oral tablets. Your prescriber decides which form is right for your situation.
Ivermectin cost and coupons without insurance
Ivermectin is available as a generic, which usually makes it one of the more affordable prescription options. Even so, generic prices are not the same everywhere. The cash price for the same tablets can differ significantly between two pharmacies in the same town, which is exactly why comparing pays off. Rx.com compares ivermectin prices across more than 60,000 U.S. pharmacies and gives you a free coupon you can use whether or not you have insurance.
Because prices change often and depend on your location and dose, we don't list a fixed dollar amount here. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price on ivermectin at pharmacies near you, then bring the coupon to the counter. There is no membership or fee to use the discount.
Related medicines and alternatives
Ivermectin is one of several antiparasitic medicines. Depending on the parasite being treated, a prescriber might consider other drugs, each with its own uses and dosing:
- albendazole and mebendazole are anthelmintics used for various intestinal worm infections.
- praziquantel is used for certain fluke and tapeworm infections.
- permethrin is a topical treatment often used for scabies and lice.
If your prescription is written for the brand tablet, you can also compare prices on Stromectol. In most cases the generic ivermectin tablet contains the same active ingredient. Only your prescriber can decide which medicine and form fits your diagnosis.
Safety and side effects
At approved doses, ivermectin tablets are generally well tolerated. When treating onchocerciasis, dying microfilariae can trigger a Mazzotti-type reaction with fever, itching, rash, tender or swollen lymph nodes, joint or muscle pain, low blood pressure, and a fast heartbeat. Ivermectin may also cause dizziness or lightheadedness when standing up. Serious and sometimes fatal brain effects (encephalopathy) have been reported in people who also carry a heavy Loa loa (loiasis) infection, so tell your provider about recent travel or living in areas where these parasites occur.
Take ivermectin tablets on an empty stomach with a full glass of water, exactly as prescribed. Its safety in children weighing under 15 kg is not established, and in pregnancy it should be used only if clearly needed. Do not take veterinary ivermectin or high, repeated, or non-prescription doses, which can cause serious toxicity including nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, seizures, and coma.
