Looking for a lamotrigine ER coupon? Lamotrigine extended-release (the generic of Lamictal XR) is an anticonvulsant taken once daily to help control certain seizures. Because a generic is available, it is usually already low-cost, but the cash price can vary a lot from one pharmacy to the next, so comparing before you fill matters. Rx.com checks prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can find a low price near you. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price on lamotrigine ER.
What is lamotrigine ER and how does it work?
Lamotrigine extended-release (brand name Lamictal XR) is an antiepileptic drug in the phenyltriazine class. It works as a sodium channel blocker, helping to calm the overactive electrical signaling in the brain that can lead to seizures. The extended-release form is designed to be taken once a day, releasing the medicine slowly over time.
It is FDA-approved as add-on (adjunctive) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures and for partial-onset seizures (with or without secondary generalization) in people age 13 and older with epilepsy. It is also approved to help people age 13 and older with partial-onset seizures convert to lamotrigine as their single medicine (monotherapy) when they are already taking one other antiepileptic drug. Note that, unlike immediate-release lamotrigine, the XR form is not FDA-approved for bipolar I disorder maintenance or for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Cost of lamotrigine ER without insurance
Lamotrigine ER is available as a generic, which typically makes it much more affordable than the brand-name Lamictal XR. Even so, cash prices for the generic can differ widely between pharmacies in the same area, so it pays to compare rather than assume every counter charges the same amount. There is no manufacturer savings card for this generic.
Rx.com compares live cash prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies and gives you a free coupon you can show at the counter, with or without insurance. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price on lamotrigine ER at pharmacies near you and to pick up your coupon.
Alternatives and related medicines
Lamotrigine ER is one of several antiepileptic drugs. Which medicine is right depends on your seizure type, other conditions, and how you tolerate it, so any change should be discussed with your prescriber. Related options and forms include:
- Lamotrigine (immediate-release) and its brand Lamictal
- Lamictal XR, the brand version of lamotrigine ER
- Levetiracetam
- Topiramate
- Oxcarbazepine
You can compare prices on each of these on Rx.com to see which fits your budget.
Safety and important warnings
Lamotrigine ER carries a boxed warning for serious, potentially life-threatening skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. The risk is higher with a starting dose that is too high, dose increases that happen too fast, or use together with valproate. Most rashes appear in the first 2 to 8 weeks but can happen later. Contact your provider right away and stop the medicine at the first sign of a rash unless told otherwise.
Other serious risks reported include multiorgan hypersensitivity (DRESS), hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), blood cell problems such as aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis, aseptic meningitis, an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior (a class effect for antiepileptics), and dose-related effects on heart rhythm and conduction (extra caution is advised for people with structural or ischemic heart disease). Lamotrigine may also make hormonal birth control less effective, and drowsiness or dizziness can affect driving.
