Methimazole is an antithyroid agent in the thioamide (thionamide) class. It treats hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, by blocking the thyroid gland's production of thyroid hormones. It is commonly used for Graves' disease and to bring thyroid hormone levels down before thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) or radioactive iodine therapy, and to help manage a thyroid storm.
Methimazole is generally the preferred thionamide, with two important exceptions: the first trimester of pregnancy and thyroid storm, where propylthiouracil is usually favored instead. Your doctor decides which medication fits your situation.
