What is Pemetrexed ?

Pemfexy (pemetrexed for injection) is a branded alternative to Alimta, indicated for the treatment of certain types of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). It is used in combination with cisplatin for patients whose disease is either unresectable or who are not candidates for curative surgery. Pemfexy works by inhibiting critical folate-dependent enzymes, thereby disrupting tumor cell proliferation.

• Nausea and vomiting
• Fatigue
• Anemia
• Neutropenia
• Rash
• Loss of appetite
• Diarrhea
• Sores in mouth and throat
• Constipation
• Shortness of breath

• May cause kidney damage - monitor renal function
• Can suppress bone marrow function - risk of infection or bleeding
• Requires supplementation with folic acid and vitamin B12 to reduce hematologic and gastrointestinal toxicity
• Contraindicated in patients with severe hypersensitivity to pemetrexed
• Avoid use in pregnancy - can cause fetal harm
• Possible severe skin reactions - monitor and discontinue if necessary
• Increased risk of toxicity when administered with NSAIDs in patients with compromised renal function
• Regular blood tests required to monitor blood cell counts and kidney function
• Potential risk of radiation recall dermatitis in patients who have received radiation therapy previously
• Inform healthcare provider of all medications being taken as there are numerous potential drug interactions
