Looking for a Velphoro coupon? Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is an iron-based phosphate binder chewable tablet used to control high phosphorus levels (hyperphosphatemia) in adults and children 9 and older with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Because there is no generic version yet, the price can be a concern for many families. A free Rx.com cash coupon can lower what you pay at the pharmacy counter, whether or not you have insurance. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price at pharmacies near you.
What is Velphoro and how does it work?
Velphoro (sucroferric oxyhydroxide) is an iron-based phosphate binder. It is FDA-approved to control serum phosphorus levels in adult and pediatric patients 9 years and older who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are on dialysis. When your kidneys cannot remove enough phosphorus, it can build up in the blood; Velphoro binds to phosphate from the food you eat so that it passes out of the body instead of being absorbed.
Velphoro comes as a chewable tablet and is taken with meals. The tablets must be chewed (or crushed if needed) and should not be swallowed whole. Always follow the dosing and schedule your prescriber and dialysis team give you.
Velphoro cost and savings: manufacturer card vs. Rx.com cash coupon
The maker of Velphoro offers an official manufacturer savings program (you can find it by searching for the Velphoro savings card on the manufacturer's website). Manufacturer copay cards like this are generally limited to people with commercial (private) insurance, and the terms, eligibility, and any limits vary and can change. They typically cannot be used if you are uninsured or covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or another government program.
That is where a free Rx.com cash coupon helps. It is a cash-price discount, so it works whether you are uninsured, on Medicare, or find that the manufacturer card is declined at the counter. You cannot combine a cash coupon with insurance on the same purchase, but you can compare both and use whichever is lower. Because Velphoro has no generic, the cash coupon is one of the main ways to trim the out-of-pocket price today. If cost is still a burden, ask your dialysis social worker or the manufacturer whether a patient assistance program is available. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price near you.
Velphoro alternatives and other phosphate binders
Velphoro is one of several phosphate binders used to manage high phosphorus in dialysis patients. Your nephrologist chooses a binder based on your phosphorus and calcium levels, pill burden, and how well you tolerate it. Other options your care team may discuss include:
- Renvela and Renagel (sevelamer) — calcium-free, non-iron binders
- Fosrenol (lanthanum carbonate) — a chewable, calcium-free binder
- Auryxia (ferric citrate) — another iron-based binder
- PhosLo (calcium acetate) — a calcium-based binder
These are not interchangeable, and switching binders is a decision for your prescriber. If you are prescribed one of them, you can look up its price and coupon on its Rx.com page. This is general information, not medical advice.
Velphoro safety and side effects
Velphoro has no boxed warning. The most common side effects are discolored or black stool, diarrhea, and nausea. Black stool is expected with an iron-based product and is generally harmless, but tell your provider if it comes with other symptoms. Because Velphoro contains iron, use caution if you have an iron-accumulation disorder such as hemochromatosis or a significant stomach or bowel disorder; it has not been studied in people with peritonitis, major gastric or liver disorders, or recent gastrointestinal surgery. If you also receive IV iron or an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), your team may monitor your iron levels.
Velphoro can reduce how well your body absorbs some oral medicines, such as levothyroxine and doxycycline, so those may need to be taken at a separate time. Take Velphoro with meals and chew (or crush) the tablets rather than swallowing them whole. This is not medical advice — always review your full medication list and any questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
