What is tamsulosin HCl and how does it work?
Tamsulosin hydrochloride is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker (an "alpha blocker"), sold under the brand name Flomax. It is FDA-approved to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, in men. It can help with difficulty starting urination, a weak stream, dribbling, a feeling of incomplete emptying, and needing to urinate often or urgently.
Tamsulosin works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and at the neck of the bladder, which makes it easier for urine to flow. It does not shrink the prostate. It is not a medicine for high blood pressure. Doctors also very commonly prescribe it off-label to help pass kidney stones. Only your provider can decide whether tamsulosin is right for you.
Tamsulosin cost without insurance and how to save
Tamsulosin is available as a generic, which usually keeps the cash price low compared with the brand-name Flomax. Even so, the price for the same prescription can differ widely from pharmacy to pharmacy, sometimes by a surprising amount, so it pays to compare before you fill. A free Rx.com discount coupon can be used whether or not you have insurance, and many people find the cash coupon price beats their copay.
We do not list a fixed dollar amount here because prices change and depend on your pharmacy, location, and dose. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price at pharmacies near you and get a coupon to show at the counter. There is no manufacturer savings card for generic tamsulosin.
Tamsulosin alternatives and related medicines
Tamsulosin is one of several medicines used for an enlarged prostate. Other alpha blockers that relax the same muscles include silodosin, alfuzosin, doxazosin, and terazosin. A different class of drugs, the 5-alpha reductase inhibitors finasteride and dutasteride, actually shrink the prostate over time and are sometimes used together with an alpha blocker.
Which option fits you depends on your symptoms, other health conditions, and how you respond, so this is a conversation to have with your provider. If you and your doctor decide on tamsulosin, you can compare prices for it and its brand-name equivalent Flomax on Rx.com to see which costs less near you.
Safety and side effects
Tamsulosin has no boxed warning, but there are things to know. It can cause a drop in blood pressure when you stand up, leading to dizziness or, rarely, fainting, especially with your first dose or after a dose increase, so rise slowly. If you are scheduled for cataract or glaucoma eye surgery, tell your eye surgeon you take or have taken tamsulosin, because it can cause a condition called Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome. A prolonged, painful erection (priapism) is rare but needs emergency care.
Use extra caution combining tamsulosin with erectile-dysfunction drugs such as sildenafil or tadalafil, or with other alpha blockers, because together they can lower blood pressure further. Certain strong interacting medicines should be avoided. Tamsulosin should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to it. This is general information, not medical advice. Tell your provider and pharmacist about all your medicines, and ask them any questions about your own situation.
