Looking for a doxepin HCl coupon? Doxepin hydrochloride is an inexpensive generic tricyclic medication, so you often do not need a manufacturer coupon to pay a low cash price - but the amount a pharmacy charges can vary widely from one location to the next, which is why comparing matters. Rx.com checks doxepin prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can see today's lowest cash price near you. Enter your ZIP above to see the current price and print or text a free discount coupon.
What is doxepin HCl and how does it work?
Doxepin hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) in the dibenzoxepin family. In its standard oral capsule and oral solution strengths (10-150 mg), it is FDA-approved to treat depression and/or anxiety, including depression or anxiety linked to alcoholism, organic disease, and psychotic depressive disorders. At very low doses it works mainly by blocking the histamine H1 receptor, which is why the low-dose 3 mg and 6 mg tablets (brand Silenor) are approved specifically for insomnia marked by trouble staying asleep. A topical 5% cream form is separately approved for short-term relief of itching in certain skin conditions.
Doxepin is available as an FDA-approved generic and is not a controlled substance. Because the same molecule is used at very different doses for very different purposes, it is important to take exactly the strength and form your prescriber ordered.
Doxepin cost without insurance and how to save
Generic doxepin is one of the older, lower-cost prescription medicines, so most people pay a modest cash price even without insurance. The catch is that pharmacies set their own cash prices, and two stores in the same town can charge noticeably different amounts for the identical prescription - so it pays to compare before you fill. A Rx.com discount coupon is free to use and often beats a standard cash price; it works whether or not you have insurance, though you cannot combine it with your insurance on the same purchase.
There is no manufacturer copay savings card for generic doxepin. The low-dose brand Silenor has its own official website (silenor.com) where any current offer terms are posted; those terms vary and can change. To find the best price on generic doxepin near you, enter your ZIP above to see today's price across local and mail-order pharmacies.
Doxepin alternatives and related medications
Doxepin belongs to the same older class as other tricyclics your prescriber may consider. If you are comparing options, related medicines include:
- Amitriptyline - another tricyclic used for depression and often prescribed for related conditions.
- Nortriptyline - a tricyclic sometimes chosen for a somewhat different side-effect profile.
- Silenor - the low-dose (3 mg/6 mg) doxepin tablet approved for sleep-maintenance insomnia.
- Trazodone - a different antidepressant frequently used to help with sleep.
- Mirtazapine - an antidepressant that can also cause drowsiness.
These are not interchangeable, and only your prescriber can decide which fits your situation. Whichever one you are prescribed, you can compare its price on Rx.com. This is general information, not medical advice.
Doxepin safety and key warnings
Doxepin carries a boxed warning that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults under 25; it is not approved for use in children. Watch for new or worsening mood changes, especially early in treatment or after a dose change, and contact your prescriber right away. Doxepin must not be used with, or within 14 days of, an MAO inhibitor, and it should be avoided in people with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma or urinary retention.
Common effects reflect the drug's anticholinergic and sedating nature: dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, next-day drowsiness, and lightheadedness on standing. Older adults are more sensitive to falls and confusion (doxepin is on the Beers list), and an overdose can be dangerous to the heart. Avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines while taking it. Always follow your prescriber's instructions and ask your pharmacist about interactions - this is not medical advice.
