What is Oxymorphone Hcl?
Oxymorphone HCl, marketed under the brand name Opana among others, is a potent opioid analgesic used primarily for the treatment of severe pain, where alternative treatment options are inadequate. It functions by binding to mu-opioid receptors in the brain, altering the perception and response to pain, along with producing generalized CNS depression. Due to its high potential for abuse and dependence, it is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance.
Side Effects
- Extreme dizziness or weakness, shallow breathing, slow or uneven heartbeat, sweating, cold or clammy skin, seizures
- Severe confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
Warnings
- This medicine could cause infertility. Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you plan to have children.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, lung or breathing problems (including COPD, sleep apnea), low blood pressure, adrenal problems, an enlarged prostate, gallbladder problems, pancreas problems, trouble urinating, or stomach or digestion problems. Also tell your doctor if you have a history of depression, severe scoliosis, head injury, brain tumor, seizures, or drug or alcohol abuse.
- This medicine may cause the following problems:High risk of overdose, which can lead to deathRespiratory depression (serious breathing problem that can be life-threatening)Sleep-related breathing problems (including sleep apnea, sleep-related hypoxemia)Worsening of painSerotonin syndrome, when used with certain medicinesAdrenal gland problemsLow blood pressureIncreased risk of seizures
- This medicine can be habit-forming. Do not use more than your prescribed dose. Call your doctor if you think your medicine is not working.
- Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. Your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it completely.
