What is Siklos?
Siklos (hydroxyurea) is a medication primarily used to treat sickle cell anemia by reducing the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions. It works by helping to increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels in red blood cells, which can prevent the cells from sickling and improve blood flow. Side Effects
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
- Trouble breathing, tiredness, uneven heartbeat, yellow skin or eyes
Warnings
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
- This medicine may make you bleed, bruise, or get infections more easily. Take precautions to prevent illness and injury. Wash your hands often.
- Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

- This medicine may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen. Do not use sunlamps or tanning beds.
- Oral routeThis medicine may cause birth defects if either partner is using it during conception or pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. If you are a woman who can get pregnant, your doctor may do tests to make sure you are not pregnant before starting this medicine. Use an effective form of birth control during treatment with this medicine and for at least 6 months after the last dose. Male patients with female partners should use an effective form of birth control during treatment and for at least 1 year for Droxia® and Hydrea® and at least 6 months for Siklos® after the last dose.
- Do not breastfeed while you are using this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, bone marrow problems, leg ulcers, lung disease, or HIV infection.
- Oral routeMedicines used to treat cancer are very strong and can have many side effects. Before receiving this medicine, make sure you understand all the risks and benefits. It is important for you to work closely with your doctor during your treatment.
- Talk with your doctor before using this medicine if you plan to have children. Some men who use this medicine have become infertile (unable to have children).
