What is Atovaquone?
Atovaquone is a synthetic compound classified as a hydroxynaphthoquinone, which exhibits antiparasitic properties, primarily used as an antimalarial and for the prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP). It functions by inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport in parasites, effectively disrupting their energy production. Atovaquone is often administered in combination with proguanil under the brand name Malarone® to enhance its efficacy against malaria.Side Effects
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
- Dark urine or pale stools, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
Warnings
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have liver disease or stomach or bowel problems.
- Your doctor will check your progress and the effects of this medicine at regular visits. Keep all appointments.
