Looking for a methotrexate sodium coupon? Methotrexate sodium is a widely prescribed medicine used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, severe psoriasis, and certain cancers. Because it is available as a low-cost generic, you often do not need to pay full retail price, but the cash price can still vary a lot from one pharmacy to the next, so comparing matters. Enter your ZIP above to see today's methotrexate sodium price, and Rx.com will compare discounts across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can pay less at the counter.
What is methotrexate sodium and how does it work?
Methotrexate (methotrexate sodium) is an antimetabolite and folate antagonist. It works by blocking an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase, which cells need to use folate (a B vitamin) to make DNA. By slowing the growth of rapidly dividing cells and calming an overactive immune response, it can ease inflammation in autoimmune disease and slow the growth of certain cancers. Because of these effects, it is also classed as a DMARD (disease-modifying antirheumatic drug) and an antineoplastic (cancer) drug.
It is FDA-approved for rheumatoid arthritis and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis; for severe, disabling psoriasis that has not responded to other treatments; and for several cancers, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL, including prevention and treatment of central nervous system disease), breast cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, gestational trophoblastic disease, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and mycosis fungoides (cutaneous T-cell lymphoma). It is sold under brand names such as Trexall, Otrexup, Rasuvo, Xatmep, and Jylamvo. Your provider will choose the form, strength, and dosing schedule that fits your condition.
Methotrexate sodium cost and savings without insurance
Methotrexate sodium is available as a generic, which usually makes it much more affordable than the brand-name versions. Even so, the cash price without insurance can differ widely depending on the pharmacy you use, the form (oral tablet, oral solution, or injection), the strength, and the quantity you fill. That is exactly why comparing prices is worth it, two nearby pharmacies can charge very different amounts for the same generic prescription.
Rx.com compares discount prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can find a lower price near you. Enter your ZIP above to see today's methotrexate sodium price and print or show a free coupon at the pharmacy. There is no membership required to use the discount.
Brand equivalents and related alternatives
Methotrexate sodium is the active ingredient in several brand-name products, including Trexall, Otrexup and Rasuvo (auto-injector pens), Xatmep and Jylamvo (oral solutions), and the older Rheumatrex (discontinued). Because the generic contains the same active ingredient, it is typically the lower-cost option compared with the brand. You can also compare the base listing for methotrexate.
For rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions, providers sometimes use other disease-modifying drugs such as leflunomide, sulfasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine, or biologic medicines like adalimumab. People taking methotrexate are also frequently prescribed folic acid to reduce side effects. These medicines differ in dosing, cost, and safety, so ask your provider or pharmacist which is the best fit for you before switching.
Important safety information
Methotrexate carries several boxed warnings, the FDA's strongest warnings, because it can cause serious and sometimes fatal toxicity. It can harm an unborn baby, including fetal death and birth defects, and it should not be used during pregnancy for non-cancer conditions. It can cause severe or fatal allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions, and it requires close monitoring for serious effects on the bone marrow (low blood counts), digestive tract (mouth sores, ulcers, and bleeding), liver (damage, scarring, and cirrhosis), lungs (pneumonitis), skin (severe reactions), and kidneys.
For most non-cancer uses, methotrexate is taken only once a week. Taking it every day by mistake has caused fatal overdoses, so it is very important to follow your dosing schedule exactly. Avoid alcohol, since it adds to the risk of liver damage, and be aware that NSAIDs and some other drugs can increase methotrexate toxicity. Folic acid supplementation, when prescribed, can lower certain side effects. This information is not medical advice, tell your provider about your health history and every medicine you take, and talk with your provider or pharmacist about whether methotrexate sodium is right for you.
